Depository
The collections of the Laboratory began to be systematically gathered from 1974 during archaeograhpical expeditions: these continued up until 2002 (little has been added to the archive since this date). The collection is divided into 27 territorial groups that correspond with the regions in which the books and materials were gathered during the expedition.
Since the collection was chiefly formed as a result of fieldwork during the last quarter of the 20th century, it reflects the modern condition of the medieval Russian book and manuscript tradition in a vast region stretching from the north Urals to Kazakhstan and from the Volga region to Western Siberia. The collection thus allows us to follow historical processes in the social, political, and religious life of this territory.
In the Laboratory’s collection, one can find a reflection of the fundamental features of the medieval Russian book and manuscript tradition as it came to exist in modernity. Thus, there are textbooks, liturgical literature, Old Believer polemical and eschatological essays, samples of recent chronicles, historical, geographical, and scientific treatises, medieval music sheets, and anthologies of religious poetry. Many of the books bear the autographs of famous figures in Russian history and culture. The earliest manuscripts are from the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th centuries.
The collection offers us the opportunity to trace the development of Eastern Russian book printing from its very beginnings to the early 20th century. It also reflects the basic stages in the development of Western Russian book printing.
In the Laboratory’s archive, alongside literary artefacts there are archival documents on the history of Old Belief (personal archives).

One can find a brief overview of the collection in the index prepared by A. V. Poltaev in 19901. There is also a printed catalogue which contains some brief information about all the manuscripts and old printed books in the collection before 2000.2. Full scholarly descriptions have been published of the Dalmatovsk (III)3 , Shadrinsk (XIII)4, Shatrovsk (XIII)5 and Talitsk (XI)6 collections: in these, one can find detailed descriptions of 404 manuscripts and 162 old printed books. Work on a full description of the collection is ongoing. The musical manuscripts of the collection (281 individual items) were described by N. P. Parfent’ev. 7. A range of works by N. V. Anufrieva8 and an article by V. I. Baidin 9. discuss the characteristics of the collection’s illuminated manuscripts. For the analysis of some individual artefacts, one can turn to works by S. A. Beloborodov10 , N.N. Pokrovskii11, I.V. Pochinskaia12, E. A. Poletaeva’s review studies the collection’s hagiographical literature.13 . 35 electronic copies of the collection’s books and manuscripts have been placed onto our website. In one of her articles, I. V. Pochinskaia discusses the current state of our knowledge about the collection14. One can also find a bibliography of works prepared on the basis of materials from the Laboratory’s Depository15.
